One of the most accomplished unraveling-couple films of recent years, writer-director Maren Ade’s second feature brilliantly captures the growing disconnect between mismatched young lovers Chris (Lars Eidinger) and Gitti (Birgit Minichmayr), whose moments of tender intimacy are often immediately followed by cruel passive-aggressive behavior. On vacation with Gitti at his parents’ villa in Sardinia, architect Chris feels his artistic greatness has been unrecognized; his sulking is sometimes indulged by his far more sanguine girlfriend. After spending time with an older, more successful friend and his pregnant wife, the fault lines in Chris and Gitti’s relationship grow even wider. For all the film’s emotionally volatile scenes, Everyone Else never devolves into histrionics, its precise examination of the hazards of coupledom always ringing honest, true, and instantly recognizable.

Getting there

Located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, The Film Society of Lincoln Center's Walter Reade Theater is on 65th Street near Amsterdam Avenue.

Our theater is convenient to the 65th Street stop of the 1 train, as well as being five blocks from a major transportation hub, Columbus Circle. Bus Lines M104, M5, and M7 all stop in front of Lincoln Center.

Walk west on 65th Street, look for the FILM banner on 65th Street. For access to the upper level use: the new public staircase on the north side of 65th St near the mid-block crossing, the elevator in the Juilliard School, the elevator or the escalator directly beneath the theater.

Since it appears there is enough interest in having a group meet in Jersey City, a couple of us have decided to try to get a Stammtisch going in addition to our regular Manhattan events. The monthly Jersey City Stammtisch will meet on the 2nd Thursday of the month for the next few months at the new Zepplin Hall in Jersey City (directions to follow). I'll try to get there early to secure a table for us and will bring a paper "Stammtisch" sign with me. If it rains, we'll just meet inside. I hope some of you Jersey City / Hoboken residents will come join us in the beer garden.

By Hudson Bergen Lightrail: Take the lightrail to Jersey Avenue. Make a right into the very large Zepplin Hall parking lot next to the Lightrail Station walking toward Grove Street.

We had such a great time here last time, I've decided to give this place another chance. Back to our monthly schedule we will meet on the first Thursday of every month.
This month let's meet at the lovely location in the lower east side near the F train stop at Delancey Street for Awesome happy hour prices. Tom Fennell ist Gründer und Präsident des Fernsehsenders German Kino Plus (GKP+), der Amerikanern eine große Auswahl an sehenswerten deutschen Spielfilmen, Fernsehserien, Kinderprogrammen, klassischen Filmen und Reportagen bietet. Er ist auch einer der treusten Sponsoren dieser Gruppe. Tom erwähnte mir gegenüber letzte Woche, dass er seit Kurzem auch Rockbandsponsor ist. Seine Hauptband heißt Cornerstone, kommt aus Österreich, und wird am Dienstag, 21. Juli in der sagenhaften Rockbar Kenny’s Castaways ihren New-York-Einstand geben. Kenny’s Castaways liegt an der Ecke Bleeker und Thompson Strassen, mitten in Greenwich Village. Die verlangen $5 eintritt. Am folgenden Abend spielen sie in Hoboken in der Lokal Whisky Bar am Washington Street ($10 eintritt), dann kehren sie nach Österreich zurück.

Wären beide Shows völlig von Mitgliedern dieser Gruppe überlaufen, würden das Tom und die Band zweifellos freuen. Die Band schreibt und singt auf Englisch, kennt aber vermutlich deutschsprachige Coverversionen, die wir mitsingen könnten. Das würde den Rest des Publikums überraschen, und der Band vielleicht gefallen.

The Austrian rock band Cornerstone is making its New York debut on July 21.

Tom Fennell owns and runs German Kino Plus (GKP+), a nationwide provider of high-quality German films, television series, children’s programs and newscasts. He is also one of the NYC German groups’ most devoted sponsors. Because of Tom’s generosity during the last three Steuben Parades, our groups distributed thousands of roses and hundreds of pounds candy to onlookers and became, by many measures, the crowd favorite.

Tom mentioned to one of the other Meetup Organizers last week that he has begun promoting several European rock bands here in the United States. He is working with Cornerstone, a young band from Austria that is currently winding its way across the country. They are finishing their tour with one-night stands on Tuesday, July 21 at the legendary rock bar, Kenny’s Castaways (corner of Thompson and Bleeker), charging a $5 cover charge and on Wednesday, July 22 at the Whisky Bar on Washington Street in Hoboken ($10 cover charge).

It is my utmost hope that we can pack both shows with members from our group. It would be a wonderful welcome to New York for the band, and a nice show of gratitude to our sponsor. The band writes and performs in English, but who knows, they may have German covers up their sleeves — songs that we all know. That would make for a pretty entertaining, memorable and unusual evening, even by Greenwich Village standards.
